Alter Idem I
2026 · Lithography on Solnhofen limestone, toner transfer · Edition of 5
In November 2022, one hundred portraits of people who never existed were created using Lensa AI. Two of these images were subsequently combined using Pixelwakker, a now-defunct image-processing app. One portrait served as the master, while the other became its constituent pixels — the child.
Their roles could be reversed.
Humans are remarkably adept at recognising faces. Even where no one exists, we perceive the presence of another.
Alter Idem — «another, the same» — explores this perception: an apparent individual emerges from fragments of two artificial identities. A digital image, potentially reproducible without limit, is transferred onto lithographic stone and printed in an edition of just five. An image without a real-life subject takes on a physical existence. And a face with no one behind it meets our gaze.
Lithographic stone preparation and printing realised with the generous technical assistance of Joachim Dierauer at Druckwerkstatt Schloss Haldenstein, Switzerland.
